Fantasy Football Tips

Fantasy football players, or team owners, create their own teams. A lot of thought goes into the creation of that team; it's almost like that person's baby. So it follows that people can get upset if they lose their team, even more so possibly than losing a real favorite team.

Most people can only dream of owning a real football team, because of the huge amount of money this would cost. If this is your dream, you can realize it through owning a virtual team. Here are some tips to keep in mind if you are going to play the game and own a virtual team, to help you get the most enjoyment from the game:

1. Be clear about league rules

The real life game restricts how its leagues may operate, but in the fantasy game each league is different, because the league members decide their own rules, under the management of their league commissioner. The commissioner is also responsible for sorting out any disputes between league members, which means that he or she should have a good knowledge of the game, and be fair. Before you sign up for an account with a fantasy football website and create your team, make sure that you are clear about that particular league's rules.

2. Learn how the league is run

Become familiar with the format of the league's competition, how many member teams there are, and any details such as prize money or fees, if the league has these. The majority of leagues have between eight and sixteen teams in them, and the types of teams is connected to the drafting of players, so you should find out about this as well.

3. Prepare for drafting day

This is a particularly important part of the game, and league members often have an actual face-to-face meeting for it. Make sure that you prepare for drafting by:

-Being aware of the type of drafting system being used - auction or serpentine; if it is an auction draft you should have up-to-date statistical information on the players so that you make good use of your allocated budget;

-Knowing the rules and scoring system, because your choice of players will be significantly influenced by these;

-being aware of free agents and players which are likely to be up for trade;

-Considering using software for forecasting and statistical analysis, if you can afford to do so; and

-Being prepared with the necessary tools such as statistical data and cheat sheets, which will help you choose your players. Do not share these with other members because you don't want to let them guess your strategy.

Most team owners take the game of fantasy football very seriously, but remember, the overall aim is to have fun. Don't lose sight of the fun part of the game!
